6. How to Package and Market Irresistible Agritourism Experiences

Speaker: Claude-Jean Harel, Great Excursions Co., Regina, SK

When people visit your farm, are they getting an authentic, irresistible experience?

Claude-Jean Harel reveals tips and perspectives from the customer side of this question with unparalleled expertise in the experience tourism industry. He offers close connections to consumers of unique and boutique tourism products attained through his own tourism company and through research for his written columns and radio shows.

C-J will bridge the gap between what you have to offer, and what consumers want to buy. His approach is specially designed for agritourism operators in remote areas, and those who prefer to offer complete quiet packages and intimate experiences than to entertain the masses or ever be concerned with crowd control. He believes tourism is really just a great big network of buyers and suppliers of experiences that are packaged and marketed though a variety of constantly evolving channels.

How does this tie into agriculture? The land from which agricultural producers derive their subsistence evokes a privileged relationship involving people, soils, plants, animals and a particular landscape. It attests to a connection between inhabitants and a territory, flavors, commodities, a body of knowledge, traditions, practices, rituals and a specific regional adaptation. The challenge is that tourism operators must cater to consumer expectations, while travelers are becoming more sophisticated and are lured by authentic experiences.

The caveat is that planning is key. So if it’s farm vacations, bed and breakfasts, camping expeditions, wine and culinary weekends, or nature tourism on the ranch. This workshop will help you best package what you, your family, and your ranch or farm have to offer, in a way the paying customers will value enough to return over- and over again.

The workshop is divided into several modules:

Prelude: The Rise of Experiential Tourism
Module #1: Travel Motivation Trends in Pictures and Numbers
Module #2: Packaging for a New World
Module #3: It’s all in the Story
Module #4: Assembling the Lived Reportage
Module #5: Cracking Challenges and Leaping over Hurdles
Module #6: Creating Tourism Destinations: 12 Characteristics of Success
This workshop is sponsored by Canadian Farm Business Management Council.
