Farmers' Market Coalition Timeline

Farmers' Market Coalition Timeline 2000 – 2001

  • NAFDMA Engaged in a Cooperative Agreement with USDA/AMS
    • Inventory existing associations
    • Develop materials to encourage formation of new statewide associations
    • Begin to develop basis for a National Farmers’ Market Coalition
2002
  • NAFDMA renewed the Cooperative Agreement with USDA/AMS
    • Coordinate public forums to address Farmers’ Market Promotion Program
    • Facilitate formation of Farmers’ Market Coalition
2003
  • Inaugural Meeting held in Charlotte, NC
    • 16 states and Canada were represented
2004
  • First Annual Meeting held in Sacramento, CA
    • 26 states, 3 Canadian provinces and United Kingdom were represented
  • Group requested to remain operational under the umbrella of NAFDMA and ratified organizational structure accordingly
2005
  • Annual Meeting held in Boston, MA
    • 24 states and 2 provinces representing a total of 2,578 farmers’ markets
    • 15-member FMC Council is elected
  • USDA/AMS continues financial support
  • Farmers’ Market Coalition Coordinators are contracted to provide management and coordination of FMC projects
  • Grant program in partnership with Project for Public Spaces (PPS), with funding provided by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation is created
  • Public policy summit held in Washington D.C in October
  • Position Paper “Farmers’ Markets Are Good for Everyone” is published
2006
  • Annual Meeting held in Austin, TX
    • 21 states, 2 provinces and the United Kingdom were represented
    • Discussion began whether members wanted to remain tied to NAFDMA or become an autonomous organization
  • FMC/NAFDMA Membership offered
  • Five Regional Workshops (beginning Nov 2005) offered in NH, MI, ID, GA and LA
  • FMC Council votes to separate from NAFDMA and become its own entity.
