4. Greening the Farmers' Market

Going green is not just a fad, it’s a trend that’s here to stay. This trend isn’t just for consumers at home; it’s reaching everyone from large corporations to farmers’ markets. What color is your farmers’ market? Going green includes using eco-friendly utensils, waste diversion, composting and reducing or eliminating the use of plastic bags. Going green can translate into big publicity for your market, too. How can you capitalize on this publicity? How is your market branded? Is the market really what you want it to be?

Creating a Zero-Waste Farmers' Market

Katie Bauer, manager of the Boulder Farmers' Market in Colorado, and John Ellis, a market vendor, will delve into the details of the Zero-Waste Farmers' Market program at their market.

Going Green: How one market is taking the steps

Lulu Meyer of CUESA will take us through the steps they’ve taken to implement their Waste Wise Farmer's Market program at the Ferry Plaza Farmers' Market. One of the first steps CUESA is taking is to set up waste stations for compost and recyclables. Another step is eliminating plastic bag use. The project coordinator is creating a handbook to help farmers’ markets go green.

Group Brainstorming

Randii MacNear will lead group brainstorming of ways to take green steps with your markets
